Help needed for the Paia Youth & Cultural Center Skate Park

As many of you know, I’m an avid supporting of all good deeds on Maui and donate money from every session to a good cause through my GIVINGisAWESOME campaign. The Paia Youth and Cultural Center is raising funds for their skate park. They are 50% away from their goal and there are 6 days left in the fundraiser. This is a very important center for the youth on Maui, so if you have any spare dollars around, I would really love it if my friends and clients could give to this important project.

I didn’t get the full 200 comments I was hoping for, but I appreciate SO VERY MUCH everyone who came and commented. Peter and I decided we were just going to go ahead and donate the full $200 even though we didn’t get the 200 comments. I really, really am thankful for everyone that stopped by my little blog to make a comment for Japan. I have dear wedding clients that live there with their little boy and they are fine but remain in my thoughts and prayers as do all the people their affected by this tragedy.

I sit here a world away from Japan – seeing images on the internet and on tv of the devastation there. It hurts my heart to see people looking for their loved ones. People who have lost everything. No food. No water. This affects everyone – men, women, children. How can I help? How can we help?

Leave me a comment below – whatever you want to say – prayers, well wishes, words to loved ones in Japan – anything. For each comment, I will donate $1 (up to $200) to the American Red Cross tsunami/earthquake relief fund. I will make the donation tomorrow morning, so please submit your comment now!

Empty Bowl Soup Project for the Hays County Food Bank

When my dear friend Katie invited me to attend a charitable event where I could do good AND get fed AND walk home with my very own soup bowl, I was so excited to go. The event was held on Sunday at the Kyle City Hall. It was a lovely event and there were so many soups to choose from it was quite difficult. I picked out a beautiful bowl to bring home – they were all made by college students. The food, music, cookies, and people were all delightful and we had such a wonderful time. This was a benefit for the Hays County Food Bank. As you all know, food banks are a near and dear cause for me.

A big thank you to all the people involved who made this event happen. It was so much fun!

Mini Sessions | Austin Children’s Photographer

The weather turned out wonderfully on Saturday – perfect for our Valentines Mini Sessions. I was so happy to see so many children come out for this event. All the kids have grown so much since I photographed them last! I even got to meet some new friends – Elle from Ella Bella Photography brought her two adorable boys down.

While it was wonderful seeing everyone, this day was also about raising funds for the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas and Austin Pets Alive – thank you to the families that donated generously! We raised over $160! This money will do a lot of good in our community – thank you again.

The fine print: These sessions are for children only and will take place in the afternoon at the Happy Cow Farm in South Austin (off of Brodie, south of Slaughter). You will receive a link to view your four proofs on January 31st. To receive your free set of wallets (eight of the same pose), and to receive discounts on print products, all orders must be placed by February 6, 2011. Orders placed after that time will be subject to shipping charges and billed at the regular rate. All photographic prints (excluding Canvas) are on sale for 50% off (for this event only). Press printed valentines cards are on sale for $50 per set of 25 (regularly $75). I have adorable V-Day designs to choose from that I will share in your viewing gallery. I am suggesting a $10 cash donation, however, leave it to your discretion. 100% of the donations from this event will be split between my two favorite charities: Austin Pets Alive and the Capital Area Food Bank.

Faces of Marbridge Villa | Dog Visit | Austin Lifestyle Photographer

A few weeks ago I was asked if I could volunteer some time and photography to Marbridge Villa in Manchaca. I have seen the Marbridge sign on FM 1626 many times, but didn’t know what it was. When I went to their website I learned that Marbridge is a residence for adults with cognitive challenges. The campus is beautiful and they focus on their residents abilities and offer many programs for enrichment and entertainment. On my first visit to view the facility, I walked in and the residents were having a Margarita Party (no alcohol of course) and everyone was smiling and happy. When I walked in, I didn’t know what to expect. When I walked out, my heart was happy.

I went back a few days later to capture the visit of Lady and Lucy Lu, two Standard Poodles and their owners, who make weekly visits to residents. It is an amazing thing to watch interaction between people and dogs. These two dogs bring so much enthusiasm and excitement.

I very much enjoyed my visit and am looking forward to my next visit for more events at Marbridge. When I took the images in on Monday, I took the kiddos with me and they got to say hello to several residents, which was enriching for everyone.

It is my mission that no child ever goes hungry and thusly why I support the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas. But giving goes so much further beyond that. I got an email today from a client who is raising funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and will be running a half marathon. When we moved to Austin last year, I was surprised at how many homeless people there are. I had never seen this before. My heart went out to those that are hungry and those that are cold in the winter. I made it my mission to start the GIVINGisAWESOME campaign benefitting the Capital Area Food Bank this year.

Thanks to you, my fabulous clients, we have raised quite a bit of money for the food bank and hundreds, if not thousands, of meals for those who need them.

But I also fealt like I needed to do MORE. It is with that spirit that I joined two photographer volunteer associations recently. Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep provides families who have lost a child (up to one year) a free photographer to document their precious child. I had gone back and forth for over a year before I decided to join this group of amazing people. I didn’t know if I could be strong enough emotionally to take on such a task. But I’ve come to the conclusion that I can do it, and I will do it, and I’ll just HOPE that I’m never needed… because no family ever deserves to lose a child.

I have also joined up with the Pictures of Hope Foundation which provides parents a free photography session when their child is in the NICU. You need me, I’ll be there.
